He also worked on studies about implementing recycling to get rid of this type of waste, and monitoring disease outbreaks in the Kingdom through a phased program to end up covering the whole country.

In the following three years (2005 - 2008) Dr. Ghanem moved to work at the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority, where he served as assistant manager and advisor to the department of transport, infrastructure and logistics. Dr. El-Sheikh also contributed to the preparation of the State of Iraq Cities Report, Iraq Housing Market Assessment, Iraq Housing Policy, Egypt Urban Development Strategy and led several urban development initiatives in the Arab region. He has trained professionals from various Arab states on land development and informal settlement upgrading. He has also authored a number of publications and articles in international journals.
